About
Although being raised in the Black Country, surveying in Kent and teaching in Manchester; now settled in the North of England the subject of my art is predominantly nature. In particular that of the Peaks and Pennines, through Derbyshire, Lancashire and Yorkshire. A lifetime love of art and art galleries, studying Modern Art and the Philosophy of Art at university, a BA (Hons) in Classical Studies, together with careers in both cartographic surveying and teaching have provided a lifetime of experiences that have shaped my art practises. Through my degree I analysed the art of others and what defines art itself. Surveying gave me 18 years immersed in nature and the skills to represent it formally. Whilst teaching gave me the opportunity to explore art through the eyes of a child. My work has been described as 'strong and painterly'. I want the viewer to see evidence of the paint being worked in my art, whilst maintaining a lifelike depiction of the subject. I work from photographs taken either by myself or talented friends, as I believe experiencing the subject in life is essential in order to create a true representation of nature.
